TYLER
I came to RVAPT wanting to support a local small business as well as continue evolving and growing in my personal health and fitness. Prior to joining RVAPT I was going to the cookie cutter HIIT focused gyms that didn’t offer the variation I ultimately realized I was missing.
What I have found special about RVAPT is the sense of community and support that is offered by the staff as well as the other members. Having a core group of other members that I can count on seeing every morning helps hold me accountable and enjoy the process.
The Performance Program helped me channel my inner child. One of my personal frustrations is that there aren’t adult play grounds - where adults are free and encouraged to move in dynamic ways that feel more like play than a 'chore'. RVAPT is my personal adult play ground where I get to express myself through movement and strength.
Since joining RVAPT I feel like I’m part of a community. It has offered me an outlet that allows me to show up in other important areas of my life.
Before finding RVA Performance Training, I was nervous about strength training due to a recent diagnosis of osteoporosis. As an older person, I noticed my overall fitness had decreased and I was literally feeling "out of shape."
RVA PT was the only training organization that responded to my request for information about strength training as an older woman with osteoporosis. Liz started us off by walking me through some exercises to get a feel for my current mobility and strength, first demonstrating each movement she wanted me to try. She checks with me after each set to ask me where I felt the exercise (which muscles), how hard (or not hard!) it felt, and whether I had any pain with any part of the movement. She is extremely knowledgeable, intuitive, and creative, employing resistance bands, body weight, dumbbells, etc. to help me work similar muscles in different ways, and she is really great about challenging me at each session while ensuring I don't risk injury.
I enjoy working out so much! I look forward to each session, I feel stronger and more confident in my day to day physical activities, and I love being able to challenge my muscles even though I'm apparently "old." Liz helps me see I'm capable of a lot more than I anticipated.
Before coming to RVAPT, but biggest struggle was to be consistent and keep motivated to go to the gym. My biggest frustration with previous gyms were definitely the toxic environment and the judgment that would happen there.
I think exercise for me is super super important when it comes to mental health. I was borderline depressed a lot of the times because I wanted to change and do something for myself but I couldn’t. And since I started going to the gym and being consistent, everything changed.
The programs that you offer definitely helped with accountability, because you guys are just awesome people/coaches and really care about us. I love hearing that y’all missed me when I’m away for a few days for a trip or something. And also all the different cycles and different glasses help me to not get bored. Not to mention how fun you are to be around!
Life is completely different, because I always look forward to be at the gym by the end of the day, I learn new things and prove to myself that I can do awesome stuff! I love having small milestones that I can work on if not every day every week. I have consistency, I have a schedule, I have new friends and I am working on myself!
